Financial Records System Manual

Chapter 19 - Special Reporting: Could I Use It?
DEFINITION
Special Reporting is reporting that the user designs to meet particular needs not met by standard system reporting or ad hoc reporting. The FRS provides two user defined reports; which are:
  • Z Writer     -     Screen = ZWS
  • FBM070     -     Screen = 036 & 037
All special reporting in the FRS is attribute driven, that is, data is sorted or organized based on attributes selected by the author of the report.

A brief description of the these two reports is provided to assist the user in selecting the best option for meeting a particular set of requirements. Additional instructional information provided by Information Associates Incorporated is available from the FRS Management Office.

Z WRITER
Z Writer is the most flexible of the two report writers and requires the least maintenance but it does have a significant limitation. It can report data from the general ledger or subsidiary ledger but not both in the same report. Z Writer organizes data in a list or matrix format. The choice is often dependent on which selection is capable of producing the desired results because there are limitations of both that must be examined.

Your imagination is your guide in writing Z Writer reports. They can be written to meet just about any need. An example of a report that could be written is a college expenditure summary. It could be done in a matrix format with expenditure categories across the top of the report and departments and/or accounts down the side.

FBM070
The FBM070 report is more difficult to write and maintain. Every line and column of the report must be defined. It does have the advantage that both general ledger and subsidiary ledger information may be combined in one report. FBM070'S can only be done in a matrix format.

FBM070's are extremely useful for automating complicated reports such as financial statements.
