Chapter 3 - What Are Fund Groups?
HIGHER EDUCATION STANDARD FUND GROUPS
Most universities including Colorado State University organize their accounts into groupings specified by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Audit Guide and the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO). Also, the State of Colorado requires that the pronouncements of these two organizations be followed for state institutions of higher education. The required fund group structure is as follows:
  • CURRENT UNRESTRICTED FUND
  • CURRENT RESTRICTED FUND
  • STUDENT LOAN FUND
  • ENDOWMENT FUND
  • PLANT FUNDS
  • AGENCY FUND

FUND GROUP USE RESTRICTIONS
The AICPA and NACUBO have established restrictions about what kinds of activities may be conducted in each of these major fund groups. Specific questions should be directed to General Accounting.
